Bolton have completed the signing of Poland international Ebi Smolarek on a season-long loan from Racing Santander. The 27-year-old will spend the season at the Reebok with a view to signing a permanent deal next summer.
Smolarek, who was the first person ever to win the Polish player of the year award in three consecutive years, was tipped to be one of the stars of Euro 2008 after scoring nine times during Poland's qualifying campaign. Injury hampered his performance, however, and he failed to find the target as Poland exited the tournament at the group stage.
Racing Santander, who signed for Smolarek for £3.2m from Borussia Dortmund last summer, released a statement confirming the deal. "Racing and Bolton have reached an agreement for the loan of Ebi Smolarek to the British team until June 30, 2009," the statement said. "As well as that, the English outfit have an option to buy the Polish striker."
Smolarek, who is the son of former Poland player Wlodzimierz Smolarek, has 13 goals in 34 appearances for his country.
Hull City have completed the loan signing of Sunderland defender Paul McShane. The Republic of Ireland international, who joined the Black Cats from West Brom last August for £2.5m, will spend the season with Hull after losing his place in the Sunderland first-team. McShane made 22 appearances for Roy Keane's side last season, but has yet to feature in the new campaign.
