Everton have been cleared to play Marouane Fellaini against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday despite the Belgian football association's attempt to impose the five-day ruling on the £15m midfielder.

Fellaini withdrew from Dick Advocaat's squad to face Estonia yesterday to have a wisdom tooth removed, a decision that created a rift with the new Belgium coach and prompted the Royal Belgian Football Association, KBVB, to urge Fifa to ban the 21-year-old. Under Fifa rules the world governing body can ban a player from appearing for his club for up to five days after an international fixture "in the event that the player, for whatsoever reason, did not wish to or was unable to comply with the call-up".

Fifa, however, has told Everton they will not be punished for an internal Belgium dispute. "The Belgian FA did lodge an appeal with Fifa asking them to implement the five-day ruling," said Everton's spokesman Ian Ross. "However, Fifa have contacted the club to say that we have no case to answer and that we did comply fully with all necessary legislation. We are delighted with the news as Marouane will be available on Saturday."

Advocaat, the Belgium coach, was alleged to have agreed to release Fellaini after Saturday's defeat of Turkey only to alter his stance afterwards. The midfielder underwent surgery regardless and provoked an indignant response from Advocaat and the KBVB.

The Goodison club insisted they should not be punished for a dispute between the player and his international manager. Ross said at the time: "We were told that the player had struck an agreement with the manager which meant he would be available for their game on Saturday but would then be omitted from Wednesday's game as he required minor surgery to remove a wisdom tooth. It would appear that the manager changed his mind and told Marouane that he would, after all, be needed on Wednesday night."
