Liverpool have confirmed that Glen Johnson suffered a medial ligament injury to his right knee during his side's 1-0 win over Aston Villa last night.

After leaving Villa Park on crutches last night, the defender underwent a scan at the Merseyside club's training ground at Melwood which revealed the extent of the injury which forced him to limp off with two minutes of normal time remaining at Villa Park.

"A scan today has revealed a tear in the medial ligament in Glen's right knee," said a club spokesman. "The player will see a specialist tomorrow, after which we should be able to more accurately determine the length of his rehabilitation period."

Not long after Johnson was forced to the sideline, Fernando Torres scored an injury-time winner to secure all three points for Liverpool.
