Robin van Persie is on course to play some part in Arsenal's Premier League title run-in after the club's physiotherapist, Colin Lewin, said he would return to full training immediately.

Arsenal have five games to go, with a chance of the title if they can win all of them, and Van Persie's availability for the final two or three would be a boost. They play Manchester City on 24 April and then finish with Blackburn Rovers and Fulham early next month.

Van Persie injured ankle ligaments on international duty with Holland last November when he was tackled by the Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini, and the frustration at Arsenal was intense as he had started the season in excellent form. Arsène Wenger, the manager, said that Chiellini's challenge had been a bad one.

But Van Persie is now closing in on his comeback and, in the process, he intends to prove his fitness for the World Cup finals. Lewin confirmed that another injured Arsenal player – the captain Cesc Fábregas, who cracked his fibula last week – would "comfortably" regain fitness in time to play at the finals with Spain, and he had encouraging updates on the defenders Johan Djourou and Kieran Gibbs. Djourou has not played all season because of a knee-cartilage problem and Gibbs has been ruled out since last November with a fractured bone in his foot.

"Johan has made virtually a full recovery and we expect him to train fully with the squad within the next fortnight, as will Kieran," Lewin said. "They have both made full recoveries from what could have been career-threatening injuries. Robin will be joining the squad for full training immediately. That is a big boost for the club and to see Johan and Kieran training with the team in the next fortnight will give everyone a big lift. Cesc is doing well. He is likely to be out for the rest of the season but, if everything goes well, he will comfortably make the World Cup."
