Wayne Rooney has described the English media as "disgusting" for being in Portugal to report on the England striker while he is on a break there with his family.

The 28-year-old is in the country with his wife, Colleen, and two sons, along with two fitness experts as he keeps himself fit following a groin strain that caused him to miss the last three matches of the season for Manchester United. The forward last featured on 26 April.

In a tweet he posted on Sunday the Liverpudlian wrote: "Disgusting that English press have flew out to Portugal to follow me while I'm with my children."

While in Portugal Rooney has been photographed with his family and he has also posted videos of himself keeping fit in which Kai, his son, has featured. He also approved the publication of a photo of Kai in an England shirt on Twitter, so his tweet regarding the press may lead to accusations of double standards.

The rest of the England squad will travel to Portugal on Monday for Roy Hodgson's training camp in the Algarve. The squad have a five-day stay in Vale de Lobo before returning home for their first World Cup warm-up game, the friendly with Peru on 30 May at Wembley.

Rooney's Manchester United team-mate Phil Jones was fit enough to join the rest of the squad on Sunday and is expected to take his place on the plane to Portugal as his recovery from a shoulder injury continues to be positive.
