Rangers have reached an agreement to sign Jermain Defoe on an 18-month loan deal that will take the former England striker up to the end of his contract with Bournemouth.
The 36-year-old joined Bournemouth on a free transfer from Sunderland in July 2017 but has made only four Premier League appearances this season, all from the bench, and has not scored since March last year.
Although it seems unlikely Defoe will play for Bournemouth again – the three-year contract he signed will have expired by the time he finishes at Rangers. The Premier League club have inserted two recall clauses in the loan agreement, giving them the option to bring him back. The first clause can be activated in July 2019 and the second in January 2020.
Defoe will join Rangers, who are second in the Scottish Premiership, at their training camp in Tenerife.
Ralph Hasenhüttl has confirmed the Southampton midfielder Steven Davis is to rejoin Rangers. The 34-year-old left Ibrox to sign for Saints during the summer of 2012.
Davis has found his first-team chances limited and Hasenhüttl said: “The fact is he has a half-a-year contract here until the summer, so what we want to give him is a chance to make the next step. If there is a possibility, then we will help him to do so.”
