Manchester United 1-1 Young Boys: Champions League – as it happened

Minute-by-minute report: In his second game as United boss, Ralf Rangnick shuffled the pack to take a look at the rest of his first-team squad, plus a few youngsters from the academy. Scott Murray was watching.

Jamie Jackson was at Old Trafford tonight and his report has landed. Get clicking, my MBM pals. Thanks for reading this report. Nighty night!

Ralf Rangnick speaks to BT Sport: “I was fully aware before the game that this team haven’t played together. The first half hour we did OK. We had a few errors but we should have been two or three-nil up. We didn’t score and were a bit sloppy. Obviously after we conceded we were not defending high enough and were not proactive, and we could have also conceded two or three. If the final score was 3-3, nobody could have complained. Also the good things, quite a few debuts, game time for players who need it. I wouldn’t say I was happy but it was OK.” He also reports that Wan-Bissaka has “two knocks, one on the knee and one on the wrist”.

We now know the identities of 15 of the last 16 clubs in the 2021-22 Champions League. Not a good night for La Liga, with Sevilla and Barcelona both crashing out.

The group winners: Manchester City, Liverpool, Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Lille, Juventus.

The runners-up: PSG, Atletico Madrid, Sporting, Internazionale, Benfica, Atalanta/Villarreal, Salzburg, Chelsea.

Updated

Group F isn’t finalised yet. United had already won the group before a ball was kicked tonight. Young Boys finish bottom, their European adventures over for another year. But tonight’s other game between Atalanta and Villarreal was postponed due to heavy snow, and will be played tomorrow. Atalanta need to win to make it through to the knockouts; a draw will suffice for Villarreal.

Pos Team P GD Pts
1 Man Utd 6 3 11
2 Villarreal 5 2 7
3 Atalanta 5 0 6
4 Young Boys 6 -5 5

Wan-Bissaka is still down getting treatment. He looks in some pain, having damaged his wrist while falling down the slope at the back of the pitch. He’s currently surrounded by medical staff.

FULL TIME: Manchester United 1-1 Young Boys

The draw doesn’t matter for United, who top Group F anyway. It’s costly for Young Boys, who don’t get the win they needed to retain their Europa League hopes.

90 min +6: Wan-Bissaka crosses from the right. Faivre claims, drops, then claims again. Wan-Bissaka crashes into the advertising hoardings and doesn’t get back up.

90 min +5: All very scrappy. Young Boys coach David Wagner stands soaked through by the rain, a beaten man.

90 min +4: Young Boys can’t get anything going. United’s young boys are holding their shape very well.

90 min +3: A corner for Young Boys on the left. It’s taken short. Kanga dribbles it straight out for a goal kick. That’s incredibly poor given his team’s situation.

90 min +2: A break in play as three galoots race onto the pitch and prance about for a bit, before getting hauled off to the jug.

90 min +1: Lefort whistles a cross in from the left. Savage’s first act in a Manchester United shirt is to clear the danger.

90 min: There will be five added minutes.

89 min: Lingard is replaced by Iqbal, while Mata makes way for Savage. Zidane Iqbal is the first British South Asian to play for United, while Charlie Savage is the son of Robbie.

87 min: Matic momentarily loses control of his feet while wandering upfield. The ball squirts to Maier, who is suddenly clear on goal and should do much better than dragging a lame shot wide right. Matic a very lucky chap.

86 min: Elia is replaced by Maier.

85 min: Young Boys stroke it around the back with a weird lack of urgency given their need for all three points.

83 min: Hefti strips Van de Beek of possession, just to the right of the United box. He shuttles the ball inside for Sierro, who aims for the top left but gets nowhere close.

82 min: A pass rolled out left to Lefort, in acres just inside the United box. Lefort has plenty of time to line up his shot, but leans back and shovels a weak effort miles off target.

80 min: Sierro scuffs the free kick and it’s an easy job for Matic to belt clear. That was appalling.

79 min: Shoretire is booked for a clip on the heel of an in-flight Elia. A free kick out on the right, and an opportunity to line everyone up on the edge of the United box.

78 min: United are doing very little in attack. Greenwood tries to get things moving with a determined burst in from the right wing, but there are too many men to beat and he’s forced to turn tail.

77 min: Camara is replaced by Lauper.

76 min: Martins meets a dropping ball on the edge of the United box and shanks it so spectacularly it spins out of play for a throw on the left.

74 min: A lengthy break in play, Wan-Bissaka having suffered a whack in the mouth. On comes the trainer. Wan-Bissaka is good to go again after a little treatment.

72 min: Mengi, the last man, slips under pressure from Kanga, who barrels into the United box. Mengi springs back up immediately, like Denis Law in his prime, and blocks Kanga’s shot. That’s wonderfully tenacious defending, the young man clearing up his own mess.

71 min: United’s intensity has dropped markedly. These things take time, as a local lyricist once wrote.

69 min: Young Boys have enjoyed 53 percent of possession so far this evening.

68 min: United make a double change, Shoretire replacing Diallo, Henderson making way for Heaton, who finally makes his United debut at the age of 35. He started his career at Old Trafford in 2005 but never got a game during his first spell at the club.

Updated

66 min: Sierro creams a diagonal pass towards Hefti, on the byline to the right of the United goal. Hefti pulls back for Maceiras, unmarked on the penalty spot! His first time shot sails wide left. What a chance that was. Bailly, dropping back to cover, Phil Babbs his special area on the post and takes a while to get back up, but does so eventually.

Updated

65 min: A Young Boys corner on the right. Sierro takes it, and hits long. Lustenberger, just to the left of the penalty spot, meets the dropping ball and lashes wildly over the bar. Young Boys are giving this a good go.

63 min: A cross into the United box from the right. Lefort shapes to meet it on the volley, but Diallo, behind him, does enough to put him off. Lefort wants a penalty, but he’s not getting one.

62 min: Changes for both teams. Shaw makes way for Mengi, while Young Boys make a triple switch, replacing Siebatcheu, Aebischer and Rieder with Sierro, Kanga and Hefti.

60 min: Matic, under no pressure whatsoever, slices high into the air. That allows Elia to break into the box on the right. He drags his shot across Henderson and wide left, out for a goal kick. What a chance for Young Boys, who need to win if they’re to have a chance of Europa League participation in the new year.

59 min: United break forward, Lingard with options on both sides, Young Boys light at the back. Lingard slips Elanga in on the right. He’s got time to size things up ... but slams his shot straight at Faivre, who saves well nonetheless. United have had their chances all right.

57 min: Diallo takes on Lustenberger down the right. The Young Boys captain intercepts but then falls over, kicking his own leg instead of playing the ball back to his keeper. Diallo has a clear run on goal ... but for some reason the referee awards a free kick to the visitors. That’s ridiculous. Lucky Lustenberger.

Updated

55 min: There’s breaking news of another postponed match: Tottenham have had to call off their game with Rennes tomorrow night, on account of the Covid outbreak in their camp.

54 min: There goes that second-half vigour, the pace of play suddenly dropping considerably. The home fans amuse themselves by serenading Solskjaer again.

52 min: Greenwood dribbles in from the right and rolls a shot towards the bottom right. It’s on target but doesn’t have the necessary power to beat Faivre.

50 min: Siebatcheu spins and looks for the top-left corner from 20 yards. Always high and wide.

49 min: United are snapping around with renewed vigour, possibly having received some beneficial advice from the new boss at half-time.

47 min: Rangnick wanders out of the tunnel in a very relaxed manner, fashionably late.

46 min: United are attacking the Stretford End in this second half, which is just as they like it. Almost immediately, Lingard and Elanga combine crisply down the right wing, the latter making it to the byline. His shot-cum-cross is palmed out by Faivre, a crucial intervention with Lingard sure to tap home otherwise.

United get the second half underway. No changes for either side.

HALF TIME: Manchester United 1-1 Young Boys

United could have been a couple of goals up; instead they could quite easily be going in behind. As it stands, a level scoreline is about right. It’s been great fun.

45 min: Matic gives the ball away, United careless in playing out from the back again. That allows Aebischer to romp towards the United box. He tees up Siebatcheu, whose effort loops back towards Aebischer, who flashes a low drive goalwards from a tight angle. Bailly sticks out a telescopic leg to deflect a certain goal away from danger.

44 min: A reminder that Young Boys need to win this evening if they’re to have any chance of finishing third and qualifying for the Europa League.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Young Boys (Rieder 42)

What a goal this is! Van de Beek, playing out from the back, gives the ball straight to Rieder, who punishes him severely for the mistake. Rieder takes a touch to move in from the left, and curls a pearler into the top right, Henderson no chance whatsoever!

Updated

41 min: Martins, to the right of the United D, belts goalwards. The ball deflects off Van de Beek and over the bar. The resulting corner’s swung viciously towards the near post but dealt with confidently by Henderson.

39 min: United ping it around patiently. Suddenly Diallo strokes a glorious long diagonal pass towards Shaw on the left. Shaw enters the box and tries to beat Ngamaleu. He can’t quite do it, the ball clanking off the Young Boy. Shaw claims a penalty ... and it does hit his arm ... but neither referee nor VAR shows any interest.

37 min: Martins strides down the middle and curls a powerful shot towards the bottom right from a fair old distance. It’s heading in, and smothered well by Henderson. A good, open game, this.

35 min: So that’s three huge chances in three minutes, all of which should really have been converted. Somewhere, in a parallel universe, it’s 3-1 to United.

33 min: Greenwood scampers along the byline to the left of the Young Boys goal. He cuts back for Mata, who slams towards the bottom left. The ball pinballs off Lustenberger, then onto the foot of Faivre, which sends it over the bar. Mata should have scored.

32 min: Lefort makes good down the left and cuts back for Rieder, who should do better than slapshotting straight at Henderson from 12 yards.

31 min: United should be two up. Diallo is sent scampering clear down the left. He’d be within his rights to shoot, but cuts back for Lingard instead. He cuts back too far, the ball rolling behind his team-mate, allowing the visitors to clear. What a chance.

Updated

30 min: Van de Beek and Ngamaleu collide in a 50-50 challenge. The decision goes the way of Young Boys, and it’s a free kick out on the right, a chance to load the box. Greenwood heads the set piece clear.

29 min: The crowd sing a song of Solskjaer. Still a hero round these parts. No hard feelings.

28 min: Aebischer sends a curler towards the top right from the best part of 30 yards. It’s an easy catch for Henderson, but that’s the first attempt on goal this evening from the visitors.

27 min: Wan-Bissaka clips the heels of Rieder and earns himself a lecture from the referee.

26 min: Mata hoicks a hopeless free kick high into the stand.

25 min: Mata finds Lingard in acres of space down the left with a sensational diagonal pass. Lingard cuts back to tee up Shaw, only for the referee to get in the way. The chance to shoot gone, Shaw wedges a pass into the box instead. It’s half cleared, and Lefort brings down Greenwood. Free kick, 25 yards out, just right of centre, and Mata’s eyes light up.

23 min: All a bit scrappy again, with both teams conceding unnecessary fouls.

21 min: Rieder slips a ball down the inside-left channel for Elia. Henderson is forced to run out of his box to blooter into the stand.

20 min: Mata swings it straight into the arms of Faivre.

19 min: Diallo is fouled out on the right. Matic takes a quick free kick and Mata wins the first corner of the night.

17 min: The other game in Group F, between Atalanta and Villarreal, has been postponed due to heavy snow in Bergamo. They’ll try to play it tomorrow instead.

Updated

15 min: Lefort shovels a pass down the left in the hope of releasing Rieder. Bailly is quickly over to cover and shepherd the ball out for a goal kick.

13 min: There’s a rare old atmosphere in Old Trafford tonight, despite the complete lack of jeopardy for the home heroes. It’s fair to say the arrival of Rangnick has energised the fanbase.

11 min: Elanga is very fortunate to escape without censure for scraping his studs down the shin of Maceiras. There didn’t appear to be any intent, the young man simply mistiming his challenge, but it was out of control, and enough to elicit a scream of pain from the Young Boys man. Happily, Maceiras is good to continue, no real harm done.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Young Boys (Greenwood 9)

This was nice and easy for United. Elanga slips Shaw into space down the left. Shaw crosses low towards the near post. Greenwood leans back and from eight yards flicks a sensational effort into the bottom left. That is such a clinical finish.

Updated

8 min: It is pouring down in Manchester. Stair rods. That’s not exactly earth-shattering news, but it is happening.

6 min: Young Boys counter and Siebatcheu finds a pocket of space just inside the United box. He hesitates fatally and the space is closed up. United clear.

5 min: United are knocking it around crisply now, the ball moving fast across rain-sodden turf. Wan-Bissaka has acres to run into down the right but shows too much of it to Lustenberger and the chance to cross is gone.

3 min: Mata hoicks a speculative ball forward. Young Boys don’t deal with it. Diallo prepares to break clear into the box, but his own man Elanga gets in the way. Diallo is forced a little to the left, and though he gets a shot away, he’s now falling backwards and can’t get any power behind it. So close to a dream start for United’s young boys.

Updated

2 min: All a bit scrappy in the opening exchanges.

Young Boys get the ball rolling ... but only after the knee is taken. Warm applause meets the gesture. There’s no room for racism.

The teams are out! United are in their famous red shirts, while Young Boys wear their second-choice white strip. We’ll be off after a quick parp of the old Champions League anthem.

Updated

An extremely relaxed Ralf Rangnick chats to BT Sport. “For me this is a perfect opportunity to see all these other players in a competitive game. On the other hand we have another game coming up on Saturday, so for me it was clear that I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. It’s still a strong team. We still want to be proactive and always on the front foot, and this will be our style for the next couple of months. I would like to give as many of the young players an opportunity to play as I can.”

Pennant watch. Nemanja Matić is Manchester United’s captain for the night. He’ll be handing over this luxury commemorative gift, boasting elegant stitching, gold pendular cords and a generous quantity of velvety yet durable tassel, to his opposite number Fabian Lustenberger.

It’s very much young boys versus Young Boys tonight, as Ralf Rangnick makes 11 changes to the starting XI named against Crystal Palace last weekend. Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga are among the starters, with academy players Matej Kovar, Bjorn Hardley, Teden Mengi, Charlie Savage, Zidane Iqbal and Shola Shoretire on the bench. All of the 11 stood down have the night off entirely.

The teams

Manchester United: Henderson, Wan-Bissaka, Matic, Bailly, Shaw, van de Beek, Mata, Lingard, Diallo, Greenwood, Elanga.
Subs: Heaton, Mengi, Shoretire, Kovar, Hardley, Savage, Iqbal.

Young Boys: Faivre, Maceiras, Camara, Lustenberger, Lefort, Martins Pereira, Aebischer, Elia, Rieder, Ngamaleu, Siebatcheu.
Subs: Zesiger, Sierro, Kanga, Sulejmani, Jankewitz, Burgy, Maier, Toure, Lauper, Hefti, Zbinden, Laidani.

Referee: Benoit Bastien (France).

Preamble

There’s no jeopardy here for Manchester United, who have already won Group F and can spend the evening grooving in the new rules, methods, tactics and techniques imposed by Ralf Rangnick. They may want to avenge their opening-day defeat to Young Boys, of course, but it’s no biggie. For their part, the youthful chappies of Berne will be desperate to complete a double over United, as it’s the only way they’ll have a chance of claiming third place and a spot in the Europa League ... and even then, they’ll require Villarreal to win at Atalanta. It all starts coming down at 8pm GMT. It’s on!
