Judy Murray has condemned the leaking of her son Andy Murray’s private medical information by “someone you thought you could trust” as he continues to deliberate over his presence at Wimbledon this year.
Murray’s participation at the championships remains uncertain after he underwent back surgery on a spinal cyst on Saturday in the aftermath of his retirement from early in his second-round match against Jordan Thompson at Queen’s Club last Wednesday.
The ATP, the governing body of men’s tennis, posted on X that Murray was ruled out of Wimbledon. The post, which was promptly deleted, followed a report in the Telegraph which identified Murray’s injury as a spinal cyst and suggested that Murray will be out for six weeks.
In response to the report, Judy Murray wrote on X: “When your private medical details are leaked to the media by someone you thought you could trust. So disappointing,” she posted. “And – FYI – not ruled out yet.”
With Wimbledon starting next Monday, time is not on Murray’s side as he continues to see if it is possible for him to compete there. It is expected to be the 37-year-old’s final appearance at his home grand slam tournament.
Murray’s team continue to assert that he is yet to decide on his next steps. In a statement on Monday, a representative of Murray said: “Following his surgery on Saturday, Andy is continuing to work with his medical team to confirm when he will return to the court. At this stage, no decisions have been made and we will update further as soon as anything has been finalised.”
Less than three weeks after undergoing knee surgery, meanwhile, Novak Djokovic arrived in London and trained at the All England Club as he continued his own attempts to return in time for Wimbledon.
Djokovic sustained a torn medial meniscus of his right knee during his dramatic five-set French Open fourth-round win against Francisco Cerundolo before withdrawing from the tournament and quickly undergoing surgery on 5 June.
