County cricket: Notts stall Surrey charge, Hampshire win at Lancs – as it happened

Roundup: McCann's century stalls Surrey charge

Teenager Freddie McCann’s maiden century in his third first-class innings helped Nottinghamshire avoid the follow-on in their County Championship Division One match against title-chasing Surrey. The 19-year-old batter made 154, with 17 fours, as the hosts posted 405 in reply to Surrey’s mammoth 525, despite a career-best seven for 129 from visiting spinner Will Jacks. Leaders Surrey ended the third day at Trent Bridge 133 runs ahead on 13 for one, Dom Sibley the man out.

Hampshire beat Lancashire by an innings and 37 runs with a day to spare at Old Trafford to boost their hopes of a top-two finish. Having dismissed the hosts for 200 in their first innings and enforced the follow-on, the visitors bowled Keaton Jennings’ side out a second time for 152. Liam Dawson took five for 52 to finish with match figures of 10 for 99 and Mohammad Abbas bagged three for 18. Luke Wells offered the only significant resistance for the home side with 53.

Somerset were also on course for victory over Durham at Taunton as they look to keep Surrey within their sights. After Jack Leach’s five for 124 had seen Durham dismissed for 336 in their first innings, Somerset raced to 263 for five before declaring and setting the visitors a massive 420 runs to win. Durham then lost Ben McKinney, Alex Lees and Scott Borthwick cheaply to slump to 15 for three at stumps.

Jake Libby, Brett D’Oliveira and Adam Hose all passed 50 as Worcestershire made sure Essex would have to bat again in their rollercoaster match at Chelmsford. When bad light ended play 20 overs early on day three, the visitors had turned a 138-run first-innings deficit into a 165-run lead. Libby laid the foundations for the recovery with 65 at the top of the order but it was an 80-run stand for the sixth wicket between D’Oliveira (51) and Hose (64) that gave Worcestershire hope of securing a third successive victory.

Warwickshire banked their first victory of the season after beating rock-bottom Kent by an innings and 21 runs well inside three days at Edgbaston. Kent were bowled out in their second innings for 243 as Warwickshire’s seamers completed the demolition job they started in the first innings. Bowled out for 156 first time round, Kent mustered little more at their second attempt even on an easing pitch as Oliver Hannon-Dalby took six for 43, finishing with nine for 74 in the match.

In Division Two, Leicestershire’s international pair Ajinkya Rahane and Peter Handscomb battled to give their side a chance of saving the game after Glamorgan’s Colin Ingram had continued his batting masterclass. Rahane was 47 not out and Handscomb unbeaten on 33 with Leicestershire 144 for three, trailing by 155, when bad light stopped play with 21.2 scheduled overs remaining. That was after Glamorgan had declared on 550 for nine, with a lead of 299, Ingram unbeaten on a personal-best 257.

Centurion Ryan Higgins reached 1,000 County Championship runs as Middlesex batted themselves to an almost certain draw against promotion rivals Yorkshire at Headingley. Unbeaten all-rounder Higgins top-scored with 117, with opener Sam Robson making 108, in Middlesex’s 441 for five in reply to Yorkshire’s 601 for six declared. PA Media

It’s a resounding victory for Hampshire and an even worse day for Gary Naylor. Hampshire’s first innings score of 389 was too much for Lancashire to reach as they suffer consecutive defeats in the Championship for the first time since 1907.

To make matters worse, it’s raining in Chelmsford. You would have thought it was the last day of August.

Will Jacks has taken five wickets for Surrey against Nottinghamshire. After Freddie McCann’s dismissal, Surrey will be confident that they can bowl Nottinghamshire out before the hosts have a chance of reaching 525.

As many of you BTL have realised, Joe Root is pretty good at batting. He’s closing in on a second century in this second Test and his 34th Test century for England. 100 runs today would take him past Alistair Cook as the record holder for the most Test centuries for England.

Here’s a stat for you. Lancashire have made it to 50 runs in their second innings off of a whopping 250 balls. They still need 139 runs to match Hampshire’s first innings total.

Just as I was congratulating Freddie McCann, he’s been dismissed for 154. Fresh off reaching 150, he tried to hit his first six of the innings but was caught at long on. What a performance!

Jack Haynes has scored 50 for Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire have been awarded five penalty runs. According to the commentary team at Trent Bridge, Surrey have been penalised for throwing the ball at a player in a dangerous manner. One of Surrey’s fielders threw the ball dangerously close to Freddie McCann’s head, with the umpire deeming it a level 2 offence.

Sussex have enforced a follow-on against Derbyshire. Derbyshire’s batters will need to drastically improve to avoid losing by an innings.

Lancashire are struggling in their second innings against Hampshire. They’re 39-3, still trailing Hampshire’s first innings total by 150 runs, as Rocky Flintoff has been dismissed for eight.

Warwickshire record their first victory of the season by bowling Kent out for 243 in their second innings. The final score is Warwickshire 420 v Kent 156 and 243. Kent are failing to put up much of a fight at the bottom of the table.

Glamorgan have decided to declare so Colin Ingram won’t make it another triple century just yet. Glamorgan end the innings with 550 runs, giving them a lead of of 299 over Leicestershire.

What a day for Freddie McCann as he hits his maiden first-class century. The 19-year-old, perhaps inspired by Ahmed’s heroics, keeps Nottinghamshire going.

Wayne Madsen has scored 100 as Derbyshire try to cling on against Sussex. They’re still 363 runs behind with two wickets remaining.

Earlier, Sam Robson hit 100 for Middlesex. At 201-2, they’re still a long way from Yorkshire’s 601 total, but Robson will be chuffed with his third century of the season.

Somerset have bowled Durham out 336, giving them a lead of 156. Before, Jack Leach achieved a five-wicket haul to bowl Durham out, Brydon Carse reached a century for Durham. Lewis Gregory has not enforced a follow-on and Somerset will bat again.

Preamble

MA. Welcome to CCLive. I’m picking up the lingo already.

It’s an overcast day here in London. But more importantly, it’s dry across the rest of the country so we should be in for another fine day of county cricket.

Farhan Ahmed’s seven-wicket haul for Nottinghamshire was the big story yesterday. The 16-year-old became the youngest player in first-class cricket history in England to take five wickets or more. Yet his best efforts may all be in vain as Surrey racked up 525 runs. I’ll provide you with updates from that game as well as Somerset v Durham and the latest from the rest of the grounds.
