Paris 2024 Olympics: what you missed overnight in Australia on day six of the Games

In what was a comparatively paltry return given the excesses of previous days, just two medals were added to Australia’s total, which at the close of play on Thursday in Paris had reached 18 – eight gold, six silver and four bronze.

Swimming

Australia’s 4x200m relay delivered with a dominant victory in the final race of the night in Paris. The star-studded team of Mollie O’Callaghan, Lani Pallister, Bri Throssell and Ariarne Titmus touched home in an Olympic record time of 7:38.08 to claim a first gold in the event since 2008. Gymnastics

The incredible Simone Biles made history with her second women’s all-around victory at Bercy as the American scored her sixth Olympic gold medal and second of these Games. In doing so, she became only the third woman in history to earn the sport’s most prestigious title more than once. Read Bryan Armen Graham’s report

Race walk

Paris may be a lovely city to discover on foot but Jemima Montag was going far too fast to take any of it in on her early morning walk around the streets of the city. Montag wiggled her way to a bronze medal in the 20km race walk, finishing in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower to improve on her sixth-place finish at the Tokyo Games. Read Jack Snape’s report

Boxing

Controversy engulfed the boxing competition in Paris on Thursday after Italian Angela Carini broke down in tears after abandoning her bout against Imane Khelif with just 46 seconds on the clock. Carini took several heavy blows to the head before retiring to her corner, gifting victory to Khelif, who is one of two boxers permitted to fight at the Olympics despite being disqualified from the women’s world championships last year for failing gender eligibility tests. Football

The 2-1 defeat to the US proved to be Tony Gustavsson’s last game in charge of the Matildas, after Football Australia confirmed they would not renew the Swedish coach’s contract. Matildas players headed to Paris on Thursday after they were sent packing from the tournament with the defeat in Marseille; Gustavsson was not with the group who arrived at Gare de Lyon and attention now turns to his successor. Other bits

Giorgia Villa helped Italy to their first silver medal in artistic gymnastics since 1928 earlier this week. But Villa’s profile has managed to transcend sport in the days since her landmark medal thanks to a viral tweet which unearthed her endorsement deal with parmesan cheese.
