And here’s Dean Henderson. “It was a game of two halves,” he says. True enough. “We were attacking the game to win the game, we had a game plan. They were really good in the first half. We changed a few things… the manager felt we were playing so cautious and had nothing to lose. We were better second half but there’s more to come.”

After making seven saves, Henderson is asked by Jamie Redknapp to name his favourite. He has to think a bit. “The header,” he says eventually, meaning the one that De Ligt sent into his feet. “It was so close.”

“Have a good evening.” says Henderson, who seems a genial character. He gave his shirt to a small boy in the crowd who had a sign up, asking for it.

On expected goals, it was Palace 1-2 United. Only two?

A good spot from our friends on the Manchester Evening News. “On the plus side,” they note, United have “back-to-back clean sheets away from home in the Premier League for the first time since last November.” It’s obviously a lot better than losing 4-0, but the game was there to be won, the chances were piling up, and United couldn’t grab one. Erik ten Hag’s decision to stop Marcus Rashford in his tracks was a bizarre one, and although Joshua Zirkzee played pretty well, the bottom line shows that the gamble didn’t pay off.

The upshot is … not much. Palace remain 16th, sandwiched between Leicester and Ipswich, still winless but with two draws in the bag against the old big six. United are 11th, between Brentford and Spurs, whom they meet next Sunday. That game now feels like a must-win for both sides.

Palace will probably be happier with the point than United. They weathered the storm and grew into the game, whereas United faded after a first half in which they delivered everything but the goal.

Several United players have a word with Dean Henderson, the one that got away. He showed his class today, though André Onana did well too.

90+2 min Schlupp almost has an assist! He goes to the byline and whips in a cross towards Sarr. Martinez sees the ball out, but Palace have a corner.

90 min There will be four more minutes. Oliver Glasner may have settled for a point, as he sends on Jeffrey Schlupp for the excellent Eze – though Schlupp has a goal in him.

89 min Højlund gets a couple more touches, but you can see the rust as he can’t quite find the final ball.

88 min Højlund sneaks down the inside-left channel, but Guehi has him under control,

87 min All the noise is coming from the home fans. United play it around at the back, harmslessly. De Ligt goes long to Rashford, but it’s too long and Henderson does the clearing-up.

84 min Guehi releases Sarr down the right with a fine chip, but Palace can’t turn the opening into a chance.

82 min Sarr threatens again and Ugarte decides to give him a shove. Palace free kick, on the right, headed clear. Ugarte has the chance to break and it’s Hughes’ turn to commit a clear foul. He goes into the book.

79 min Hughes, mopping up round the back, hits a shot at Onana when a cross might have been the more obvious move. Palace, so toothless in the first 40 minutes, have had five of the past six shots. If there is going to be a winner, the ebb and flow of the game suggests it will come from Sarr or Eze rather than United’s forwards, who have gone rather quiet.

78 min Rashford goes long, looking for Højlund, finding only Henderson.

76 min United subs: Eriksen gives way to Manuel Ugarte, Amad to Rasmus Højlund, who makes his first appearance of the season. So Garnacho will go to the right and Rashford to the left.

75 min Mitchell whips the ball in from the left. De Ligt gets in the way and is relieved to find his deflection rolling straight to Onana.

74 min United corner: Eriksen chips it straight to Henderson.

72 min Big chance for Palace! Eze to Sarr on the right. Sarr beats his man and cuts the ball back, knowing that is United’s Achilles heel… but Eze’s low shot goes just wide.

71 min As things stand, Palace are 16th with three points and United are 11th with seven. Both teams badly need a win.

67 min For the past few minutes Kobbie Mainoo has been showing why he made England’s first XI in the summer. Some lovely little flicks lead to a United free kick. Eriksen curls it in and De Ligt thinks there’s a Palace handball in the moshpit, but the check is now complete and the stalemate goes on.

66 min Sub for Palace: Nketiah off, Will Hughes on to bolster the midfield.

64 min Martinez goes into the book for a stamp on the edge of the Palace area. Not even Martin Lancon (18:29) will defend that one.

62 min Rashford plays his part in a crisp move with Mainoo and Fernandes. The ball falls to Garnacho, whose shot draws yet another save from Henderson.

60 min Better from Palace, who string together some passes. A low cross heads for Sarr, who goes down inside the box under pressure from De Ligt. You can guess what the crowd think about this, but the ref doesn’t agree.

59 min Marcus Rashford is getting his kit on.

58 min Eriksen starts a flowing move and should finish it too, but he can’t quite get a shot away.

56 min Garnacho, after a quiet spell, races onto a long through ball, but his first touch is more of a back pass to Henderson.

54 min At half-time Phil Jones pointed out that Diogo Dalot was tucking in and playing as a No 6. That seems to be the key to making the Eriksen-Mainoo pivot work: Dalot’s muscular presence frees Mainoo to play his neat little passes and Eriksen to concentrate on being creative. But it still hasn’t brought a goal.

52 min Big chance for United! Fernandes exchanges passes with Zirkzee and finds himself clean through near the penalty spot, but off balance. He hits the ball with the outside of his right boot and can’t quite bend it inside the left-hand post.

51 min United’s umpteenth corner yields only a mishit from the edge of the box by Fernandes.

49 min Chance for United! It’s Amad again, cutting in from the right and curling a shot over Henderson, who gets a hand to it as it’s dipping.

48 min There’s a melée and a handball by Lerma, I think, which brings a United free kick. When they break, Eriksen very nearly plays a great through ball to Amad.

46 min Palace carry on where they left off just before the break. Eze wiggles past three United players and wins a corner.

Subs for Palace! Ismaila Sarr and Jefferson Lerma, replacing Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta. So presumably Eddie Nketiah will move into the middle.

Palace are showing the fans their new mascot. She’s an actual eagle, only four months old, called Phoenix.

And here’s Geoff Ashworth. “If Matthijs came from Friesland and played for Galatasaray, he would be the Fries Turkish De Ligt.”

“Garnacho,” says Martin Lancon. “Was that really a yellow? In Crystal Palace half, not dangerous, not a build-up of offences?” It’s a fair point.

Erik ten Hag has a simple decision to make: stick or twist. On past form, he’ll stick for at least 15 minutes, because Garnacho and Zirkzee have been pretty good. But Rashford must be itching to get out there.

38 min Better from Palace, who whip in a free kick and win a corner off the head of Zirkzee.

21 min A glimmer for the Palace fans as a long ball finds Mateta, so good at running the channels, but his attempted cross just dribbles towards Onana.

18 min Garnacho and Zirkzee get together again but can’t find a tune.

17 min The ball spends some time in midfield, the players scrapping like kids.

14 min Another United corner: Fernandes I think ends up getting a shot in from close range, saved again. And another, but nothing comes of it.

13 min Chance! De Ligt soars into the air at a corner and heads the ball down. Henderson does well to shove it out.

12 min Garnacho and Zirkzee threaten again on the break, but Palace get reinforcements back easily enough.

11 min United can’t do anything with the resulting corner.

10 min Chance! Zirkzee sends a through ball to Garnacho, who races forward with his usual boyish glee. His left-foot shot is well saved by Henderson, tipping it round the post.

7 min Garnacho tries a give-and-go, but Eriksen’s through ball is overhit.

6 min When United finally reach the halfway line, Amad is dispossessed. So far, so scrappy.

5 min United play a bit of walking football at the back.

3 min United win a corner on the right through Amad’s persistence. De Ligt gets his head to it but can only plop the ball into the arms of Henderson.

2 min Mateta is almost through on goal – but he clips Mattijs de Ligt, who goes down rather theatrically and wins a free kick.

1 min Palace kick off and soon win a throw on the left, then go back to Dean Henderson.

The players are out there and so is the evening sun. Palace in their usual red and blue stripes, United in their new third strip – off-white with bits of red and black.

Sky has been having a word with each manager. “We have respect,” says Oliver Glasner, “but we know they will give us space to create chances.” Ouch!

Erik ten Hag gets his own back when, after praising Palace’s aggression, he observes: “They make a lot of tactical fouls.”

Asked whether it was a difficult decision to bench Rashford, he says: “No, it is not a difficult decision. We have to rotate, we have so many games to cover and we have to give Alejandro [Garnacho] games. We’ve seen he has a lot of end product, so many goals and assists, and he has only started one time this season.”

Erik ten Hag’s other surprise comes in midfield. Manuel Ugarte, who started in the Carabao, has to wait for his first league start as Christian Eriksen retains his place. Eriksen was at his gleaming best on Tuesday as the No 10, but when starting in the pivot with Kobbie Mainoo, he has quite a shaky record – won 3, drawn 2, lost 2. And one of those losses was at Selhurst Park in May.
