The Matildas captain, Sam Kerr, and her partner have announced they are having a baby due next year.
Kerr made the announcement on Instagram with her American partner and fellow footballer, Kristie Mewis.
The pair are pictured in a collage of black and white photos, holding up an image of the ultrasound scan and, in another, Kerr pointing to Mewis’s stomach.
Kerr, 31, and Mewis, 33, have been together since 2021 and got engaged last year. Mewis confirmed they were engaged last November after several weeks of speculation fuelled in part by social posts featuring her wearing a diamond ring on her engagement finger.
At the time, Mewis said that along with her parents and sister, Kerr had “just been everything” to her. “My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain , all of my crazy antics,” she said.
The pair have spoken about the importance of sharing their relationship on social media to normalise “being two girls in love”.
Kerr and Mewis’s post was filled with congratulatory comments within minutes of its appearing, with one saying “bubba is so loved already”.
Both Mewis and Kerr represented their countries at the recent World Cup. In June, Kerr signed a contract extension at Chelsea with the new deal keeping her at the club until 2026. Mewis plays for West Ham United.
Kerr missed out on her chance to make the squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics this year due to her rehabilitation from knee surgery after rupturing her ACL in January.
