Former Brisbane Lions AFL player Aaron Shattock has been praised by former teammates as he remains in an induced coma following a freak accident involving heavy machinery over the weekend.
The 44-year-old was crushed by an excavator when it rolled over while working on his own property on the Gold Coast. He underwent emergency surgery on Sunday for severe chest injuries and will remain under observation in coming days.
The Lions’ three-time premiership captain and current Carlton coach Michael Voss said Shattock was “a ripping good fella” and “an outstanding teammate”.
The pair were part of the Lions’ 2002 grand final victory over Collingwood.
“I can’t believe it,” Voss said. “It’s terrible at any time but just before Christmas is even worse. Our prayers are with him and his family.”
Originally a product of Woodville-West Torrens in South Australia, the midfielder was taken by the Lions with pick 45 in 1998 AFL draft, and went on to play 57 matches for Brisbane including the 2002 grand final.
He was delisted by Brisbane and moved to Port Adelaide for another 11 games across 2005 and 2006, before being delisted again and moving to Queensland.
His local club Labrador posted on Facebook expressing shock and sadness, and asking for privacy on behalf of the Shattock family.
“‘Shatts’ is dearly loved by his family, friends, and the entire Labrador community. A true Labrador person and life member, Aaron has been a significant part of our club since 2007 – as a player, assistant coach, senior coach and committee member. His passion for our club is unmatched, and his presence is deeply valued.”
Federal MP for the local seat of Fadden, Cameron Caldwell, said Shattock “is dedicated to his family, his footy and the Labrador Tigers” and the community was shocked learn of the accident and the injuries he sustained.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Shatts for a full and speedy recovery and with his family during this time,” he said.
Shattock is being treated at Gold Coast University Hospital.
