Pep Guardiola and the Manchester City board will discuss new signings for the January transfer window this week, the manager said after his team dropped another two points in the 1-1 draw with Everton.

The result makes it one win in City’s last 13 matches and several key players are out, such as Rodri for the whole season, Oscar Bobb also for the long term and Jack Grealish, Rúben Dias, John Stones, Ederson and Matheus Nunes at present. Against Everton Kyle Walker was missing because of illness.

After the Boxing Day draw, in which Erling Haaland missed a penalty, the manager was asked if signings for the short term may be necessary because of the difficult situation. Guardiola said: “Even the players [think]: ‘Oh, we have to add some players,’ but the truth is, this season we have a lot [of problems]. And this is a problem.

“[But] I think it’s not to bring a player for that [the short term]. You have to bring a player for the next three, four, or five years. And this is sometimes not easy to do. But, of course, I think we have to try it because [the situation] has been sustained for a long time.

“Eight important players are [out]. And [Ilkay] Gündogan was not ready today [to start]. And Kevin [De Bruyne] was not ready for 90 minutes. And maybe should have come on earlier. But yes, we have this situation. It’s been a long time. And of course, you have to talk with the club and the club will decide. We have to try because this is sustained for a long time.”

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring against Everton on 14 minutes but Iliman Ndiaye equalised nine minutes before half-time. Guardiola added: “I think we were very patient. Everything takes more time to make it work [at the moment].”

The result meant City have lost even more ground in the chase for the top of the Premier League. “With the table, I have no argument,” Guardiola said. “If you ask me about the performance, we did what we have done [successfully, in the past]. Football is about winning, scoring goals and not conceding, and we’ve always done it until the last month and a half.”

Sean Dyche, Everton’s manager, said: “We believe in what we do and set our stall out early. The only thing I was worried about was lacking a bit of intent but that grew. I was really pleased with our goal.”
