That’s all from me. Thanks for reading and for your emails. Congrats to Rangers! Until next time.
Ewan Murray's match report from Ibrox
Here is a roundup of some of the other results today in the Scottish Premiership:
Aberdeen 1-2 Ross County
Hearts 1-0 Motherwell
Kilmarnock 2-0 St Mirren
St Johnstone 1-1 Hibernian
Another derby, Dundee v Dundee United, starts shortly at Dens Park.
Celtic’s expected goals was just 0.07, for those of you that care about that sort of thing.
The only disappointing moment for Rangers was the incident in which Celtic’s Engels was hit by a coin thrown from the crowd. I think it might have hit the Belgian in the face, but he was OK to continue. I imagine there will be consequences for Rangers to face from the SFA.

Celtic’s lead is cut to 11 points. Surely that is too big a gap to make any meaningful difference to a ‘title race’. But the bragging rights are huge in Glasgow and the result will also buy Clement some brownie points going into 2025. The Belgian manager was under pressure coming into this match.

Full-time: Rangers 3-0 Celtic
What a result for the Ibrox faithful! The champions have been dominated!
90+5 min: Rangers make a triple change to waste a few seconds: Hagi, Raskin, and Igamane off for Cortes, Barron, and Dessers.
Raskin has been the best player on the pitch. He has responded to being given the captain’s armband by Clement. A supreme performance in central midfield, quality with and without the ball.
90+4 min: Engels finds some space on the right wing, behind Fraser, but his cross is more like a clearance, shanked woefully behind.
Nothing has come off for Celtic today, and even when they did have the ball in the net, Kyogo was flagged offside.
90+2 min: Glasgow-born Robbie Fraser comes on for Rangers, his first taste of the Old Firm derby. He replaces Jefté, who set up the third goal and has kept Kuhn deathly quiet in this game. Perhaps that elbow to Kuhn’s nose played its part.
90 min: Five minutes added on here. Rangers look more likely to add a fourth than Celtic get a consolation.
89 min: A break in play as, unfortunately, some Rangers fans have thrown some coins in the direction of Celtic players. Nobody is hurt, but after a delay, the referee hands the offending coins to a policeman on the sidelines.
Updated
87 min: Celtic have faced the most shots today (24) since records began in 2013-14 for this sort of thing. Their next highest conceded shot count is 18, also against Rangers in May 2021.
85 min: Brendan Rodgers looks glum and who can blame him? His team have lacked quality, urgency and desire. This will be just Rodgers’ second defeat in 21 derbies.
83 min: Ibrox is absolutely deafening. Rangers might be out of the title race, but this result means everything to the blue half of Glasgow.

GOAL! Rangers 3-0 Celtic (Danilo 81)
Danilo scores! Is that his first touch?! Jefte spring forward from left back and goes beyond Johnston, hits a cross shot which is blocked by Carter-Vickers but the ball falls kindly to Danilo on the penalty spot … and the Brazilian sideboots a one-touch finish underneath Schmeichel for three!
80 min: Rangers make their first change: Bajrami for Danilo.
78 min: What a chance for Rangers to make it three! Celtic throw bodies forward and are once again caught on the break. Igamane only needs to feed an easy pass wide for Cerny for Rangers to once again get in on goal, but the Moroccan woefully underhits his pass and Scales is able to intercept.
77 min: “Hi Michael, and Happy New Year!” emails Simon McMahon. “As warm up acts go, this is a half-decent game ahead of the main event at Dens Park later when the world famous Dundee United FC take on the noisy neighbours. United have made one change from the win against Aberdeen on Sunday, with Ross Docherty replacing David Babunski in midfield. It’s the first New Year Dundee derby since we scudded them 6-2 at Tannadice nine years ago. What I’d give for a repeat today. COME ON UNITED!!!”

75 min: Hatate comes off for Celtic after one of the worst individual performances I have seen in this derby. Celtic’s record signing, Arne Engels, comes on in midfield. Straight swap.
72 min: Idah has been very loose since coming on. He has failed to hold the ball up on three occasions since coming on. Celtic are yet to have a shot on goal in this second half.
70 min: Make that 19! Schmeichel gets down to his right after a nifty shot from range from Yilmaz. From the resulting corner, Rangers have a penalty shout and while the ball does strike Idah’s fist, it is close to his body and VAR waves play on.
68 min: Just to show Rangers’ dominance, they have had 18 shots on goal. Celtic have had three.
GOAL! Rangers 2-0 Celtic (Pröpper 66)
From a Rangers corner, Raskin has a free header on the six-yard box. Schmeichel saves with his feet, but Pröpper is there at the back post to clean up the rebound and sidefoot the ball into the net! You can’t say Rangers don’t deserve that!
Updated
64 min: Triple change for Celtic and it is long overdue. Kyogo, Taylor and Bernardo go off. Idah, Valle and McCowan are on.
61 min: Jefté nutmegs Kuhn, who responds by hacking the Rangers left back to the ground. Yellow card. Those two have been at it all game.
RANGERS HIT THE POST!
59 min: The second time Rangers have hit the woodwork. Hatate again dawdles in midfield and once again, Celtic are all at sea in transition. Taylor is completely out of position at left back and Raskin threads a beautiful through ball to the unmarked Cerny. The Czech is clean through, steadies himself and curls a shot off the inside of Schmeichel’s far post. The ball rebounds but Scales is there to hack it behind for a Rangers corner. The hosts should be 2-0 up!
55 min: Hagi is so two footed and is giving Johnston a torrid time on Rangers’ left flank. The winger drives a low, deflected cross across the six-yard box and Schmeichel punches clear. That could easily have found a man in blue.
GOAL DISALLOWED FOR CELTIC!
52 min: McGregor wins the ball back brilliantly for Celtic, and Bernardo finds Kyogo with a lofted through ball. The Japanese, who has been so quiet up to this point, takes the ball beautifully on his chest and volleys a looped finish over Kelly. But the linesman flags for offside and VAR upholds the decision!
49 min: For all their possession, Celtic do look vulnerable on the counter-attack. Igamane beats Scales to a clearance and suddenly it’s three on three at the back. But Bajrami is ponderous on the ball his ball to Hagi is behind the Romanian. Celtic get back in numbers and Hagi is forced into an optimistic shot from range, gathered easily by Schmeichel.
47 min: Celtic are looking much slicker. Twice Kyogo threatens to get in behind the makeshift Rangers defence but twice Sterling is there to cover. Normally a right back, the former Chelsea man Sterling has great pace and is physically imposing and that’s a real asset against this dainty Celtic attack.
Peeeeeeeeep! We’re off again at Ibrox after a 19-minute half-time. No changes from either side, which is a little surprising from a Celtic point of view.
Half-time reading:
Half-time: Rangers 1-0 Celtic
Some unsavoury scenes as the two captains, Raskin and McGregor, clash at the half-time whistle. Just handbags, though. Raskin ends up with a booking, which is a frustrating end to an excellent half for the Rangers man.
45+4 min: Celtic’s physio’s have patched up Kuhn’s nose and the cross comes in. Rangers defend the delivery but concede a corner, from which Hatate strikes fiercely at goal … saved by Kelly! Rangers’ stand-in keeper is alert at his near post!
45+2 min: A clumsy elbow from Jefté clatters Kuhn and earns the Brazilian a yellow card. Kuhn is left with a bloody nose. Replays show that it was accidental but that was a hefty whack. Celtic will have a dangerous free-kick to the right of the box to end the half.
45 min: There are two additional minutes and Rangers seem content to play safe and get into the dressing room 1-0 up.
43 min: Kyogo, who is normally an Old Firm cheat code for Celtic, has been anonymous this half.
41 min: A sensational diagonal pass finds Cerny on Rangers’ right flank. He has Yilmaz in support and finds the Turkish full back, who cuts inside and pings a fairly wayward shot well wide.
38 min: Celtic are so slack with their passing and Rangers break once more. Bajrami has the freedom of Ibrox as he drives through the middle of the pitch with options left and right. But the Albanian checks his run, waits for Diomande to make a late run and so nearly threads the perfect through pass! Only a heroic sliding tackle from Carter-Vickers saves Diomande having an easy chance.
35 min: Hatate again turns the ball over in his own half and finds Rangers’ goalscorer, Hagi, who tries a shot from the edge of Celtic’s box. As he is shooting, the Romanian is bundled over by Bernardo and there are appeals for a free-kick, but referee Don Robertson waves play on. I think that was a fairly obvious foul.
33 min: Another free-kick to Rangers and McGregor is shown a yellow card for stopping a quick restart as Diomande attempts to switch the play. That’s a silly booking for Celtic’s captain, who now must play two thirds of an Old Firm derby on a yellow.
31 min: Hagi beats Johnston in the air and gets a nasty elbow to the neck for his troubles. There’s a break in play and that will suit Celtic, as they attempt to reset.
29 min: Hatate is having a stinker for Celtic in midfield. I would expect to see Engels on at half-time if this carries on.
27 min: Hagi twists Johnston inside out, leaving the Canadian on the deck to win a Rangers corner. Celtic clear the danger but seem content to survive at the moment.
25 min: Raskin, Rangers’ stand-in captain, is the best player on the pitch. He’s winning every tackle and has been smart in possession.
21 min: Celtic are finally settling down. They have had 60% possession but after a bright early couple of minutes have mostly pinged it around the centre backs and into McGregor in midfield. Maeda has been the bright spark on the left wing and after a good overlap from Taylor, the Japanese cuts in and shoots. It doesn’t trouble Kelly but there are signs of life for the Bhoys.
19 min: Raskin wins another duel against McGregor in midfield. The Celtic man is not happy with himself of his team, effing and jeffing to himself as he trots back into position.
17 min: Celtic go route-one and Kyogo so nearly gets clean through on goal but the forward just can’t reach the long diagonal pass.
15 min: Celtic simply haven’t got to grips with the game. They are yet to string any meaningful passes together and are second to almost every 50/50.
Rangers hit the bar!
13 min: The hosts so close to doubling their lead! Rangers attack on the counter-attack and Cerny strides forward on the right. He cuts inside Carter-Vickers and unleashes a shot that loops onto the top of the Schmeichel’s bar and over! It took a little nick off Scales’ back, so will be a corner. Without that deflection, it may well have found the net.
11 min: Now, then. We have a proper game on our hands. Diomande in central midfield has shown a couple of lovely touches for Rangers. And Jefte, at left back, has won his early battles against the dangerous Kuhn.
9 min: Perhaps I’m being a little unfair on that Hagi finish. It wasn’t the most powerful but it was so precise. Fair play to the Romanian, whose father Gheorghe is in the stands today.
GOAL! Rangers 1-0 Celtic (Hagi 7)
Rangers lead! Raskin, Rangers’ captain for the day, intercepts a lazy Scales pass in midfield and drives forward to the edge of the box. The Belgian lays the ball off to Hagi, who shoots early and catches Schmeichel on his heels. Hagi’s left-footed shot trickles into the side netting and Ibrox goes wild!
Updated
5 min: Cerny finds some space on the right and whips a cross in. The ball falls kindly three times to a blue shirt but three times Carter-Vickers makes a block. Rangers fans call for a penalty but there’s nothing doing.
3 min: From the corner, Celtic take it short and McGregor whips a brilliant ball to the far post. Yilmaz, playing at the unfamiliar position of right back today, is caught on his heels and Kyogo so nearly has a tap in! The Japanese misread the flight of the ball and Rangers were able to hack it clear.
2 min: Maeda gets free down the left wing and whips a dangerous cross into the near post. Kyogo swings and misses and Rangers nervously get the ball behind for a corner.
Peeeeeeeeeep! We’re underway in Glasgow.

There is a minute’s silence for the 66 victims of the Ibrox disaster in 1971, 54 years to the day. Impeccably observed.
The teams are out. Ibrox is rocking!
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers speaks:
It’s always a stern test. We’re looking forward to it. The players have shown great skill and talent and we play with discipline. That’s what required in a game like this.
We know they have gifted players but we’re coming here to impose our game.
Arne Engels wasn’t so well this morning, so that made it an easy decision to put Paulo [Bernardo] in.

What a game this is for Liam Kelly, Rangers’ back up goalkeeper who starts today after Butland was hospitalised with internal bleeding. Kelly joined the club aged 10 and spent nine years in Rangers’ academy but after a series of loans left the club permanently in 2018 without making a first-team appearance. After spells at Livingston, QPR and Motherwell, Kelly re-signed for his boyhood club in the summer and finally made his Rangers debut in last month’s win over Dundee. This derby, however, is a very different prospect.

Today marks 54 years since the Ibrox disaster, in which 66 Rangers fans died.
There was a memorial service outside Ibrox earlier this afternoon, which Rangers manager Philippe Clement attended.

This is the current league table, in case Rangers fans need reminding. For the neutral at least, a shame that Aberdeen’s early-season form has fallen away.

Rangers are severely weakened, but do have Rabbi Matondo and Cyriel Dessers on the bench if they need to make attacking changes. Turns out Balogun is not fit enough to even make the bench.
Celtic are almost at full strength. Only James Forrest and Odin Holm are out.

Preamble
Happy new year everyone. If the Old Firm derby is one of the fiercest in world football, this 2025 edition means the least it has done for some time. Celtic are 14 points clear at the top, impressing in the Champions League, have a proven manager, a vastly superior budget to anyone else in Scotland and have conceded just four goals in 18 league matches this season (scoring 52).
Rangers are on their worst run of the season, winning just one (a 1-0 home win over Dundee) of their past five fixtures in all competitions. The truth has always been thus: Rangers must aim to win every domestic game, and they have been a long way off that this season. There is little time to ‘build a project’ or ‘blood promising youngsters’. Manager Philippe Clement is increasingly under pressure, perhaps unfairly given the circumstances.
To make matters worse, Rangers and Clement have an injury crisis, with captain James Tavernier, Tom Lawrence, Neraysho Kasanwirjo and John Souttar all sidelined. In one of the more bizarre injuries of the season, goalkeeper Jack Butland spent Tuesday night in hospital after what he has described as “significant” internal bleeding in a leg. He is stable and recovering at home but won’t play today. Centre-back Leon Balogun is a doubt but may be available after taking a knock in the 2-2 draw at Motherwell.
Still, the sun is shining in Glasgow. This fixture is normally a midday kick-off, but many of the 50,000 Rangers fans will be well lubricated and ready to cheer their heroes towards an unlikely win. There might not be much to play in relation to the league table, but the Old Firm has always been much, much more than that. It’s on!
Kick-off: 3pm GMT.
