Wayne Rooney should be fit to play in England's World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Belarus after scans showed the striker had not badly damaged his ankle ligaments in Manchester United's Champions League tie against Aalborg.
Rooney had to be substituted in the second half of Tuesday's 3-0 win and there were fears he might be ruled out of England's plans. However, United confirmed yesterday that the injury was only minor. "Wayne has an ankle injury and is considered doubtful for Saturday's game against Blackburn, but he should recover in time for England's forthcoming matches," said a club spokesman.
The Football Association, meanwhile, has postponed its disciplinary hearing into the clash between Patrice Evra and the Chelsea groundsman Sam Bethell following United's 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge last season. The case will now be heard next month.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed Carlos Edwards from Sunderland on a three-month loan deal following injuries to their wingers Michael Kightly and Matt Jarvis. The 29-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international, who has made just one substitute appearance in the Premier League so far this term, will go straight into Mick McCarthy's squad for tomorrow's clash at Swansea.
Wrexham, who were relegated from Coca-Cola League Two last season, have appointed Dean Saunders as their new manager. He replaces Brian Little, who left the club last week after a poor start to their Blue Square Premier campaign.
Saunders, who played for Aston Villa and Liverpool, will continue in his role as John Toshack's first-team coach to the senior Wales side. "Wrexham should not be in non-league, it is a joke and I am determined for the good of Welsh football to get them back in the Football League. This club cannot stay down here for much longer," the former Wales striker said.
