Chris Eagles marked a rare first-team outing by giving Manchester United a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs in the Vodacom Challenge in South Africa. The 22-year-old grabbed the equaliser in the 59th minute, powering in a header that took a deflection off Chiefs skipper Jimmy Tau following a cross from Carlos Tevez. The Chiefs had taken the lead through Jonathan Quartey's penalty in the 37th minute.

Bobby Zamora marked his debut for Fulham with a stunning strike as his side beat Celtic 3-1 at Craven Cottage. Erik Nevland opened the scoring, but Celtic equalised in the 42nd minute, when Barry Robson curled home a free-kick. After Zamora's fine goal, Leon Andreasen made sure of the win.

A young Arsenal side, featuring summer recruit Aaron Ramsey in his first start, beat Barnet 2-1 at Underhill. The home team led at the break through Kenny Gillet, but Jay Simpson and Nacer Barazite scored for the Gunners.

Damien Duff bagged a hat-trick - and Danny Guthrie scored on his debut - as Newcastle won 4-1 away to League One Hartlepool, while Liverpool drew 1-1 away to Wisla Krakow despite a sixth-minute goal from Andriy Voronin.
