Manchester United troubles have cost Javier Hernández his Mexico place

Mexico’s coach, Miguel Herrera, believes Javier Hernández’s loss of confidence derives from his treatment under David Moyes at Manchester United

Miguel Herrera says that Javier Hernández has lost his place in Mexico’s World Cup team because of his struggles under David Moyes at Manchester United.

The Mexico manager brought Hernández on as a substitute in last Friday’s 1-0 win over Cameroon and he will rely on his impact off the bench at best in Tuesday’s game against Brazil in Fortaleza.

Herrera is supportive of the striker, who is Mexico’s most recognisable player, and he highlighted the role he played in the goal against Cameroon, which was scored by Oribe Peralta. But he did note that Hernández had, on another occasion, looked to pass instead of shoot, which reflected the way that his confidence had ebbed.

Moyes hardly started Hernández, whose nickname Chicharito means ‘little pea’, during this past domestic season and Herrera suggested that Hernández was likely to move to another club in Europe after the World Cup, where he would enjoy greater opportunities. Although Moyes has departed and Louis van Gaal has been named as United’s new manager, there remain doubts over Hernández’s Old Trafford future.

“Chicharito had a difficult year because he had a different coach to the one that brought him to the club,” Herrera said. “That coach [Sir Alex Ferguson] left and he had another one [Moyes]. But he has an impressive market in Europe and I believe he has huge possibilities to be part of another team, being one of the starting players.

“Sometimes people get heated up and carried away because they want to see Javier on the pitch but, with what we showed in the last match against Cameroon, people understand that we’ve decided to have 11 players that are going through their best time.

“When Javier went on, he started the move for the goal but he also passed when he might have shot.”
