Louis van Gaal’s first major move since becoming Manchester United manager takes place on Tuesday morning when the training pitches at the club’s Carrington base are ripped up to be replaced by Desso, a synthetic-grass hybrid material.

With Van Gaal also ordering that trees be planted at Carrington to make the facility more sheltered from the wind, the manager has wasted little time in starting to shape the club.

Old Trafford has had Desso since 2013 when the grass pitch was replaced by the hybrid surface at a cost of close to £1m following concerns about the playing surface.

The relaying of at least two Carrington pitches is the first material illustration of the attention to detail that was a factor in Van Gaal being appointed and comes less than a week after he officially began his tenure.

Van Gaal will give a first pre-match press conference in Pasadena on Tuesday evening local time before United’s first match under his tutelage, the friendly with Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday.
