The Leicester prop Julian White has been cleared to play in Saturday's Guinness Premiership final against Wasps despite being found guilty of a stamping offence. White appeared before a Rugby Football Union disciplinary committee in Bristol last night to face a charge of stamping on an opponent during Sunday's semi-final victory over Gloucester at Kingsholm.
The charge was upheld by a disciplinary panel comprising Christopher Quinlan, Mike Curling and John Doubleday, but the trio elected to suspend White for only one week, with the ban running from May 21 to 27. That leaves the former England front row free to play from today.
Stamping normally leads to a ban of between four and six weeks and, with the Italy international Martin Castrogiovanni out until next season after a shoulder operation, the champions had feared going into the Twickenham clash without either of their mainstay tight-head props. However, Leicester's rapid response to the incident – White was immediately suspended for seven days and fined £5,000 – appears to have worked in the player's favour.
