Champions League: matchday five – in pictures

We bring you all the action from the matchday five matches including the games in Naples and Manchester where wins for the two Manchester sides will put them into the next round of the Champions League

Champions League Tuesday: Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini ahead of the match against Napoli
It's no wonder Roberto Mancini looks a bit tense ahead of the tie as tonight's match is a bit of a do or die affair. Both sides need a win: if Napoli get one that means City will have to beat Bayern, which would be a big ask. Victory for City would see them qualify but that could be a tall order as Napoli haven't lost to a foreign team at the San Paolo stadium for 17 years Photograph: Alberto Pizzoli/AFP/Getty Images
Champions League Tuesday: Napoli's Cavani heads to score against Manchester City
The first quarter of an hour is quite an even affair with both sides pushing forward and firing in a few shots. Then Napoli get their noses in front after 17 minutes, courtesy of some shoddy City defending. A Napoli corner is flung in towards the near post, where Edinson Cavani has stolen a march on Yaya Touré. He flicks a header goalwards and the ball hits first Aleksandar Kolarov and then Joe Hart on its way into the net. Not the sort of defending you'd expect from a team sitting on top of the Premier League Photograph: Reuters

Champions League Tuesday: Manchester City's Balotelli celebrates after scoring against Napoli
Just after the half-hour mark it's Napoli's turn for some dodgy defending. Rather than being hoofed clear, the ball is played straight to David Silva, who shoots ... and the rebound falls to Mario Balotelli, who has an easy job of stabbing the ball into the empty net from four yards out. His celebration is in direct contrast to Cavani's, though he does extend his arms outward at one point Photograph: Giampiero Sposito/Reuters

Tuesday Champions League: Napoli's Cavani scores his second goal against Manchester City
Four minutes into the second half Napoli retake the lead courtesy of a smashing goal by Cavani. There's a neat and quick interchange of passes on the left before Andrea Dossena picks out Cavani around 15 yards out. He strikes the ball precisely and his first-time shot zips past Hart into the net Photograph: Giampiero Sposito/Reuters
Tuesday Champions League: Napoli fans
It must be cold over in Naples because the Napoli fans have lit some fires and all seem to be waving those silver insulating sheets you normally see around the shoulders of athletes after they've finished a marathon Photograph: Paolo Bruno/Getty Images
Tuesday Champions League: Edin Dzeko fires a shot past Napoli's Salvatore Aronica and Paolo Cannavaro

Tuesday Champions League: A dejected Mario Balotelli
The final whistle goes and the Premier League leaders are looking down the barrel at Champions League elimination. They will need to overcome the unbeaten group leaders Bayern Munich at the Etihad in two weeks' time, but even then that will not be enough if Napoli win at Villarreal Photograph: John Sibley/Action Images
Champions League Tuesday: Fans arrive at Old Trafford ahead of the game against Benfica
Back in Manchester, Benfica are the visitors, and the omens are good for a United victory. United have triumphed in six of the eight meetings between these two sides, the most famous victory being the 1968 European Cup final at Wembley. Benfica have yet to beat United at Old Trafford in their three visits but they're not the only team with such a record – United have only tasted defeat once in the 34 Champions League matches they've played at Old Trafford since 2005 Photograph: Paul Ellis/AFP/Getty Images
Champions League Tuesday: Phil Jones scores an own goal against Benfica
Benfica take a shock lead in the third minute after some nifty passing in the centre of the park creates space for Nicolas Gaitan on the right. He hits an effort across the face of the United goal where Phil Jones is waiting ... but the defender inexplicably sticks out a leg and slams the ball into his own net. Champions League Tuesday: Berbatov scores for Manchester United
On the half-hour mark United are level. Nani is out on the left and receives the ball from a United free-kick; he runs at Maxi Pereira and then whips in a cross towards the penalty spot where Dimitar Berbatov rises to place his header inside the left-hand post. Benfica do have grounds to grizzle about the equaliser though, as Berbatov was half a yard offside when the cross was put in Photograph: John Peters/Man Utd via Getty Images

Tuesday Champions League: Darren Fletcher scores for Manchester United against Benfica
There's relief at Old Trafford in the 69th minute when United take the lead. Patrice Evra puts a deep cross into the middle as the Benfica defence push out, but they're too slow and the ball is knocked down to Darren Fletcher, who clips it round Artur and then prods it into the empty net Photograph: Alex Livesey/Getty Images
Tuesday Champions League: Pablo Aimar equalises for Benfica against Manchester United
That relief turns to despair just one minute later when Benfica equalise, and again their goal can be put down to sloppy defending. United can't deal with Benfica's attack down the left and when the cross comes in it knocks Rio Ferdinand off his feet; the ball falls to Pablo Aimar, who taps it in Photograph: Martin Rickett/PA

Tuesday Champions League: Dejected Manchester United players after the match against Benfica

Inter were lucky to finish the game with a point as Trabzonspor peppered their goal but were unable to score.
