Struggling Holstein Kiel scored three times in a dominant first half but had to survive a late comeback from Borussia Dortmund before beating the visitors 4-2, capped by a breakaway fourth goal into an empty net, in a second straight Bundesliga loss for the Ruhr valley club.

The result saw Dortmund, who had also lost 3-2 to Bayer Leverkusen on Friday, drop to eighth in the standings while piling more pressure on already-embattled coach Nuri Sahin.

The hosts struck twice in five minutes to stun Dortmund, with Shuto Machino firing them into the lead in the 27th minute before Phil Harres headed in from close range for his fifth goal in the last three league games.

It got even worse for Dortmund with 22-year-old Harres, who has seven league goals this season, delivering a perfectly chipped pass for Alexander Bernhardsson to drill in their third goal deep in first-half stoppage time.

Dortmund left their comeback until late with Gio Reyna cutting the deficit in the 71st minute with a shot from the edge of the box and Jamie Gittens curled in a superb effort to make it 3-2 in the 78th to give his team some hope. Dortmund poured forward, including keeper Gregor Kobel, in search of an equaliser in stoppage time but it was Kiel who struck again. Fiete Arp scored into an empty goal from 45 yards out with the last kick of the game, sealing their first-ever win over Dortmund.

Bayer Leverkusen battled past Mainz with a 1-0 home victory courtesy of a superb Alex Grimaldo free-kick on Tuesday to stretch their winning run to seven straight matches and close in on leaders Bayern Munich. Last year’s domestic double winners are second on 38 points, one behind Bayern, who host lowly Hoffenheim on Wednesday. Eintracht Frankfurt are a further five points behind in third place following their 4-1 home victory over Freiburg.

Mainz suffered an early setback at Leverkusen when Germany forward Jonathan Burkardt had to be taken off injured in the third minute after making his comeback last weekend. Leverkusen gradually gained more possession and carved out several chances through Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong but Mainz held on in a goalless first half.

That, however, did not last long after the restart with Grimaldo curling his free-kick over the wall and past the reach of Mainz keeper Robin Zentner in the 48th minute. Wirtz had other good chances to add another goal as did Frimpong, who saw his shot blocked by Zentner in the 81st. The Mainz keeper also denied Nathan Tella from point-blank range two minutes later to keep the visitors in the game. Mainz then tried to put some late pressure on but had coach Bo Henriksen sent off after two bookings in stoppage time.

Wolfsburg moved up to sixth with a 5-1 thrashing of Borussia Mönchengladbach that was capped by a late double from forward Lukas Nmecha. The substitute’s pair of goals, in the 83rd and 87th minutes respectively, followed Jonas Wind’s third-minute penalty, and second-half goals from Joakim Mæhle and Maximilian Arnold. Shio Fukuda managed a consolation with a minute to go of regular time.

In Serie A, Milan came from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win at Como in Serie A on Tuesday, with defender Theo Hernández and forward Rafael Leão scoring in the second half.

Como shocked their opponents on the hour when new signing Assane Diao’s low shot inside the near post beat Milan keeper Mike Maignan.

Hernández levelled for Milan in the 71st minute with a volley from close range before Leão lobbed Como goalkeeper Jean Butez to put the visitors in front five minutes later. Milan provisionally moved up to seventh on 31 points. Cesc Fàbregas’s Como side are 16th with 19.

Juventus were held yet again as they drew 1-1 at Atalanta, with Pierre Kalulu’s early second-half goal cancelled out by a late equaliser from Mateo Retegui.

The result brings Juve’s total number of league draws to 13 for the season, keeping them in fifth place with 34 points. Atalanta, also on a three-match run of draws, remain third with 43, four points behind leaders Napoli.

Kalulu scored nine minutes after the interval, finishing Weston McKennie’s pass into the box by sliding the ball past onrushing goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi at the near post.

However, Atalanta built momentum and substitute Retegui, returning from injury, levelled with a diving header from Raoul Bellanova’s assist in the 78th minute.

Juve created other chances in the second period, including a header from Kalulu that hit the post and was cleared off the line by Carnesecchi, but had to settle for another draw.
